NO Children’s CONCERT – WHAT???

Wednesday, July 13, 2016

The Canmore Folk Music Festival is committed to outreach in our community. We host free events like Festival Friday at the Civic Center (this year featuring The Dead South on July 29th), a Music in Schools program in schools throughout the Bow Valley, a free pancake breakfast on the Monday of the festival and new this year; busking on Main street on the Saturday afternoon of the festival featuring the talented artists in the School of Song mentorship program.

For years we hosted a free Children’s Concert on the Saturday before the festival. We always want to look at how to improve what we do. After a critical analysis of our outreach programs we realized that the Children’s Concert the day the main festival begins was not the best way to reach out to the community. We noticed our audience numbers declining over the years and there is a huge logistical challenge in hosting an off-site event while attempting to prepare the festival site. We still wanted to do something to reach out to kids so this year so we entered into a partnership with The Banff Center’s Children’s Festival. Our partnership with the Children’s Festival in May has allowed us to sponsor some of the free events that have taken place, as well as the concert with Dan Zanes. We also had Dan put on a wonderful concert at Our Lady of Snows as part of our “Music in Schools” program. We love to bring music into our local schools and are committed to providing this sort of outreach in our community.

Focusing our attention on a different time of the year has given us the opportunity to look at how to enhance the Family Area at the festival. This year we have expanded the offerings to include some fun shows on the new Hi Jinx Family Area Stage on Sunday July 31 and Monday August 1. We will have Natasha Sayer and Kattam, of the Montreal based Ayrad, who will perform ‘en francais’as well as: Alberta Parks Interpretive shows, music by Rattle and Strum, storytelling, dance workshops, face painting, stilt walkers, and even a climbing wall, among all sorts of other great entertainment.
