About
Edmonton singer-songwriter Ian St.Arnaud is a little bit of everywhere to everyone. In the Fall of 2017, Americana/Folk trio North of Here (St.Arnaud, Luke Jansen, and drummer Will Holowaychuk) were nearing university graduation and preparing to demo their debut LP, dubbed The Cost of Living, when Jansen was fatally struck by a commuter train while on a run. In the following months, St.Arnaud made the decision to continue as a solo artist, rewriting songs slated for the ill-fated release along with new material in an effort to process the tragedy. St.Arnaud’s 2019 debut, keeping its original title, was a DIY tour-de-force of fun-loving melodies overlaying themes of death, loss, and anxiety, that highlighted St.Arnaud’s glass-half-full perspective of the events and on life. On their sophomore LP Love And The Front Lawn (2022), St.Arnaud continued to highlight their sardonic sense of humour and heart-on-the-sleeve, puppy-love honesty, but with the addition of a steady roster of supporting bandmates came a flourishing rock-band character. Steeping in the likes of the raucous and fun-loving 70s’ Jonathan Richman and The Modern Lovers, Ian didn’t forget about his innate talent for writing singable hooks and to practice his sha-la-las.
