Watch the Recorded Stream
The “Canmore Folk Mentorship Performance” is being streamed live by Calgary Audio Visual via YouTube. Please proceed to their channel by clicking “Watch the Live Stream”, on Saturday, September 18th starting at 1:00pm. The live stream will appear at the top of the channel feed when the time is right, you can tune in early but you probably won’t see a live video until it’s close to the correct time. The video will be posted on our YouTube channel sometime after the performance.
Important Update
On Wednesday, September 15, the province of Alberta declared a public health emergency based upon the current state of COVID-19 in the region. To protect our community, we’ve made the decision to shift the upcoming Mentorship Concert online. Therefore, the event will still be live, but it will be live streamed for you to enjoy virtually rather than in person.
The Mentorship Program Concert
Now, let’s talk about the concert! The Mentorship Project Concert will feature the talents of 5 local artists who have been working under the mentorship of 5 well-established touring artists. In early September, the project will kick off with a virtual workshop day where the mentors and mentees will explore topics such as “Music Business 101 in Canada and US,” “Stage Craft,” and “Getting the Best Sound from the Sound Tech.”
When September 18th rolls around, you can get excited for a live, 4-hour performance. Each mentor will perform a 25-minute set and each mentee will be invited to perform 2 original songs along with a third song in collaboration with their mentor.
To give you a behind-the-scenes peek at what will be going on prior to the show, here’s some more information and the program.
The Mentorship Program
Steve Dawson is the concert and collaborations coordinator for this project. He and his band (with Jeremy Holmes, Gary Craig, and Chris Gestrin) will act as the house band for the concert on September 18th.
Steve Dawson hand-selected both the mentors and the mentees for this project from a pool of applicants. The mentors include Steve Dawson and the Henhouse Allstars, Dawn Pemberton, Julian Taylor Solo, Ndidi O, and Terra Lightfoot. The local mentees are The Cave Arcade, Seth Anderson, Lori Reid, Mari Hill, and Scott Diehl. The pairings are as follows:
- Steve Dawson and the Henhouse Allstars – The Cave Arcade
- Dawn Pemberton – Seth Anderson
- Julian Taylor Solo – Lori Reid
- Ndidi O – Mari Rosehill
- Terra Lightfoot – Scott Diehl
There will be six instructional sessions on Zoom for the mentees (including Q & A), one by each of the 5 mentors and one by Alice Dawson who has managed Steve’s business affairs both in Canada and the US.
After the workshops, the mentor and mentee pairs will have a second Zoom meeting where the mentor will provide feedback on one song that has been selected by the mentee for the collaboration at the live show. Together, the pair will work on the song and develop a collaboration to showcase on September 18th.
We Will See you There!
The mentors and mentees will have been hard at work prior to the concert and we can’t wait to see what they all come up with. The entire show will be roughly 4 hours, but you are welcome to come and go as you please.
The show is completely free and was made possible with funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage. We’d also like to our lead sponsor for the year TD as well as the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, The SOCAN Foundation, and artsPlace Canmore for their role in making this event possible.
We can’t wait to share this online experience with you.
